In an odd twist, ZD Net is reporting that, in Taiwan, Linux is selling better among novice computer users than experienced users (who apparently perfer XP). The article suggests that price is a major factor.

Acer throws in with Linux

Vnunet reports that Acer will be pushing Linux aggressively, not only on it’s ultra portables, but on its laptops as well.

It appears they’re betting that a 15 second boot time, and an extended battery life (from 5 hours on windows vs 7 hours on Linux) will persuade customers to make the switch. The lower purchase price is just icing on the cake.

Linux in the Hospital

Computer World has the story. Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania replaced their aging Microsoft Exchange 5.5 with Linux-based PostPath when it became evident that their current installation couldn’t handle the load.

The hospital claims a 50% cost savings and a 2/3 reduction in staff assigned to management of email.

Six months after the migration, gone are mailbox size limits and 105 additional users now have email addresses.

ChannelWeb gives high marks to Ulteo Virtual Desktop. For a beta product, it does Linux on Windows incredibly well.

As we mentioned earlier, it’s a huge 500mb download requiring a massive 5gb disk space. The install is unimaginably slow. Still, despite its shortcomings, this product does the job.
